Artist Statement

I am inspired by daily questions and answers, human expressions and beauty; the unreliable world we live in; human life, humour, fantasies and dreams. I paint/ draw imaginary figures; some suggested, some realistic; I enjoy abstraction and placing this figures in evocative surreal atmospheres, which allows for primeval myths to surface; their humour and questions.

Dreams and Shadows

In this particular series entitled, Dreams and Shadows I talk about my personal life, how dramatic sometimes it turned – moments of evasive fear, nostalgia, uncertainty, yet with a deemed light surfacing from the depth of the tunnel

“Saudades”

Most of what happens on the canvas is triggered by the state of current social life as it becomes more and more limited to “virtuality” – it seems that technology is taking over – more is happening through the internet than live. It is scary, isn’t it?

Under the Moonlight

Our nights were odd, as the electricity (one provided by a local public generator) went off after 8pm or 9pm, our light for the rest of the night was provided by the moon, the days that it came to into play. Some days it was intense and other days it was weak and sometimes off season

Fragments

My personal life has been marked by endless sacrifices; the most painful was, going to a foreign country, and being separated from my mother and four brothers who look to me as their elder brother. I sometimes felt isolated, even in the comfort of friends or colleges. This aspect you will also find depicted in my works.

‘Propagation’, A solo Exhibition by Belmiro (Jemmiro)

Those familiar with his work, or those have been coherently been following Jemmiro’s work for the past decade or so, agree that this exhibition brought to the public a part of his creations not yet seen. As a very soft spoken individual with not much to say unless spoken to, he learnt about the hidden voice in his art that directly or indirectly spoke to him, theorizing on life and other matters, which continues to shape his art process and positions it in the attainment of a new tune. His work by virtue of visual inclination takes the viewer to fantasy and thus becoming more responsive to the instincts and intuitions of bold mysticism to his work.
