A Brief About Belmiro Jemusse
Belmiro Jemusse, also known as Jemmiro was born in Mozambique on March 16, 1976. He moved to South Africa in 2003 to practice as a full-time artist and to escape what he describes as “limitations in Mozambique” art scene at the time. He studied as a parttime student drawing and painting at Penryn College in Nelspruit, as a fulltime student printmaking at Artist Proof Studios in Johannesburg and privately advanced painting in Humansdorp, Eastern Cape.
He has participated in a number of solo and curated group exhibitions. He has produced a number of art series: “Africa, Back to the Future” (featured in his debut solo Exhibition), “Fragments”, “Finding The Inner Child”, “Supermom”, “Under The Moonlight (which was featured in a solo exhibition in 2012)”, “Saudade”, “Propagation” and recently “Dreams and Shadows”.
Jemmiro has been part of Nucleo de Arte (Mozambique’s senior artists association) board of directors who revitalized the institution from 2010 – 2011; Cofounded Veleiro Arts (atelier and gallery in Maputo).
His artworks are characterized by myth, humour, nostalgia and inquisitiveness.
